Flooded Basement

A flooded basement can ruin flooring, drywall, furnaces, water heaters and stored belongings within hours, and standing water starts growing mold in as little as a day or two.

Do this right now

  1. Stay out of standing water if outlets, cords or appliances may be underwater—shut power off at the panel only if you can reach it without touching water
  2. Find the source: groundwater, a failed sump pump, a burst pipe or a sewer backup each need a different fix
  3. Move valuables and electronics up and out of the water
  4. Start removing water with a wet-vac or pump once it's safe
  5. Photograph everything before cleanup for your insurance claim

Warning signs

  • Standing water on the basement floor
  • Water entering at the joint where the wall meets the floor
  • Water rising faster than a floor drain can take it
  • Wet carpet, swollen baseboards or a strong musty smell

What the waterproofing contractor will do

A waterproofing contractor will find where the water is getting in, remove it, and recommend a permanent fix—such as an interior drain tile and sump system, crack injection, exterior excavation and membrane, or improved grading and downspouts.

What affects the price

Emergency water removal is billed separately from permanent waterproofing. Interior drainage systems, exterior excavation, sump installations and crack repair vary widely with the length of wall, access and soil conditions. Providers set their own prices, so ask for any service-call or inspection fee and an estimate first.
